Content Written: Waqas Khan
Keyword Research is an essential process of Search Engine Optimization. It helps you rank higher in Google or any other Search Engine Results. However, not a lot of SEO consultants are able to conduct this important process diligently. They have no clear cut plan and do it haphazardly or incompletely. In contrast, keyword research should be done systematically so that your clients have better SEO results.
Keyword Research is the extensive exploration of what keywords the audience uses to get the desired results. It is the process of thinking like your audience and typing words that they would do to quench their thirst for search.
There are 5 top steps, to do a proper keyword research, which is guaranteed to land you higher in Google search results.
The first and foundational step to do a proper keyword research is to brainstorm keyword related ideas. There are various ways to go about this. For example, the client company is a software house, so to come up with keywords related to it, a consultant can use google suggestion. Google suggestion is the drop down box that appears when you type something in the Google search box. It gives you suggestions based on its huge backend database.
In addition to that, an SEO consultant can use Wikipedia to get an idea of different variations of a selected word. Uber suggest is another online tool that generates hundreds of suggestions for your typed words.
All these techniques are great to generate a list of potential keyword ideas. These ideas will be filtered out in the subsequent steps, to leave you with keywords that really matters.
2. Search Volume:
A second most important thing to consider after Brainstorming, is to have an estimate of average monthly search volume of a particular keyword. There are various ways to know how many times the users all over the world search for a particular keyword. To name a few, Keyword everywhere and Google keyword planner are great tools to start with.
Keyword everywhere is the Google Chrome extension and shows the result right in your browser. You don’t need to have a separate window or program for it. It is very convenient to use and have very accurate search results. The extension displays three variables of Volume, CPC and competition under the searched word in Google search box.
Google keyword planner is another way to get tons of keyword ideas and their search volume, along with suggested bid and competition. It should be kept in mind, that keyword planner is developed keeping in mind Google Adwords to support their PPC (Pay-Per-Click) Campagins, rather than Organic searches. However, keyword planner can be used to get accurate search volume information about a particular keyword.
The next logical step, after evaluating the monthly search volume is to check the competition for a particular keyword. Generally speaking, shorter the word, more competition you will face for scoring higher for that particular word. Also, if a keyword is near to buyer funnel, meaning the word has commercial value—it would be equally difficult to score for that word. For example, “Online IT courses” will have more competition than “Information about IT”.
4. Narrow Down
Once you have done initial brainstorming, monthly search volume and competition analysis; then you need to narrow down your final list. This is because; you can’t target all the keywords. You need to select words for which it is easy to beat the competition, has decent search volume and are popular among the users.
Go for keywords that are long-body and tail instead of short keywords. The reason is because long-body tail keywords are meaningful and are searched by users for a particular problem. Secondly, the average monthly search volume should be in good numbers, because you want to target the keywords that are popular among the masses. Lastly, lower competition for a particular word is a must, because it makes it that much easier to rank higher for it.
5. Integrating Keywords in to Website
Once you have done above steps successfully, it’s time to integrate these keywords into your website. You can include these keywords into the content of your website for added search engine boost. For example, you can use Yoast Plugin in WordPress to optimize Title, Meta Description, Focus Keywords and Image Alt attributes of Homepage, About Us and Contact Us etc .
You can also write blogs related to these keywords so that they get integrated in to your website. The more blogs you have specific to your niche, the better ranking you will get.
Once you have the blog post you can use the same Yoast Plugin to optimize the Titles, Keywords etc.
